What a kitchen remodel timeline typically looks like

What a kitchen remodel timeline typically looks like

A kitchen remodel timeline needs to be well-planned and, more importantly, well-understood by all involved to make sure the project goes smoothly. On average, kitchen remodels take 1-6 months, but that information alone isn’t enough to help you prepare for one. If you’re starting a new project, you might find it useful to learn about:
a) the different stages of the project
b) how long each one typically takes.

When you get to planning your project, your contractor will give you a timeline based on your specific requirements. However, if you would like your kitchen ready in time for a special event, knowing what’s achievable in the time available can help you make certain decisions in advance. For example, you may want your kitchen finished before an occasion, such as a wedding, a big birthday, or the arrival of a new family member. Or perhaps you need to move into your new home by a certain date and want the kitchen all set up before you do. In such cases, time truly is of the essence, so having clarity when you’re planning your kitchen remodel is key.

In our experience as a full-service design-remodel firm, communication with clients is smoother when everyone involved has a solid understanding of the timelines and process, along with clear expectations. That’s why we recommend learning about different stages of a remodel, along with the objectives of each one.

A) THE GROUNDWORK

This covers everything you need to do before the actual breaking and building can begin. You will need to:

1. Put together your ideas and set goals for your project

At your own pace

Whether you’ve just had the idea to shake things up or have been planning your perfect kitchen for years, this is the time to make the important decisions on how your kitchen will look and function as well as any major modifications. For example, you may want to create a larger space, the way we did for these clients in Falls Church, VA:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=jP6c_v8MyKA

As part of our process, we offer a complimentary consultation where potential clients can tell us about their goals and the design aesthetic they want. Here are some goals that we have helped many clients in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC achieve:

  • Create a kitchen that suits their lifestyle
  • Increase resale value
  • Incorporate smart appliances to create a more future-friendly kitchen
  • Improve functionality, so home-cooked meals become an inviting option
  • Update the space’s look, especially for older kitchens

In addition, it’s a great idea to compile photos that have inspired you together with rough measurements/sketches of the room to be remodeled. When we meet our clients at our showroom or via a virtual design consultation, we find having this information makes for a smooth design process.

2. Settle on a designer/contractor

At your own pace

Choosing the right designer and contractor for your remodel is a key decision. You need a team with the experience and professionalism to bring your vision to life on time. Even if you’re in a rush to get the job done, take the time to call the designer/contractor’s references and ask for details on their most recent work. It’s worth spending a little extra time on identifying a team you can trust – one that will meet tight deadlines, produce quality work within your budget, and give you accurate pricing.

3. Evaluate your existing kitchen

At your own pace

Now it’s time to get an expert opinion on your ideas. This usually begins with a thorough evaluation of the existing space to avoid common mistakes. Discuss these points with your kitchen designer to make sure they understand the functionality requirements:

  • Space – do you have enough counter, cabinet, and floor space?
  • Flow – is it easy to navigate, cook with family members, and interact with guests?
  • Appliances – should you upgrade to energy-saving, easier-to-use appliances?
  • Accessibility – can family members of various ages and use it safely, including yourself as you get older? What about people with disabilities?
  • Children and pets – do you need to make any special provisions for them?

4. Finalize the kitchen design

1-4 weeks

With a strong team and a clear vision for your future kitchen, you can move on to the design stage. Here, your designer will help you detail out your dream kitchen and look for the best way to bring it to life. Depending on the number of revisions, this could take 1-4 weeks. We always recommend asking for high-quality renderings to help you see what your kitchen will actually look like. What the design process entails may vary depending on whom you work with. For example, our new virtual design process offers:

  • A set of resources to help you explore your options and envision your dream kitchen or bathroom more clearly.
  • An online questionnaire to help you share that vision with us in detail
  • Google Meet to give us a chance to interact and get on the same page before we proceed
  • Physical samples that bring the showroom experience to you at home, enabling you to interact with the materials in a way videos and images won’t allow you to.

We created this process to give our clients a way to proceed with their remodel plans from home. Once the design is complete through this virtual process, we select a date to begin the remodel and take it from there.

5. Apply for building permits

Varies depending on location and specific permits needed

Every home remodel project comes with its own permit requirements, and these will vary between locations. This chart by House Beautiful will give you a sense of what generally does and doesn’t require a permit:

Be sure to check with your relevant local authority and your contractor about the permits you require.

6. Select and order materials

1-3 months

This will vary based on your selection and the manufacturing/delivery time. To give you an idea, here are our cabinet lines at a glance, sorted by price (low to high) with details on lead time:

  • Waypoint – stock 4 to 5 week lead time.
  • Bellmont 1600 – semi-custom – frameless cabinetry – 5 to 7 week lead time
  • Dura Supreme – Bria and Bellmont 1900 – frameless cabinetry – 5 to 8 week lead time
  • Dura Supreme Crestwood Inset – 5 to 8 week lead time
  • Plain & Fancy Medley – frameless cabinetry – 9 to 12 week lead time
  • Plain & Fancy Classic inset – 9 to 12 week lead time

Similarly, the time it takes to get your countertops, tiles, and other materials can vary based on the specific materials you choose.

B) THE DEMOLITION

Here, the process of taking out the kitchen begins. When you get to this stage, factor in days for these two things into your kitchen remodel timeline:

1. Complete the demolition

1-3 days

This process is surprisingly quick. It will happen before you know it, so be sure to take a few “before” shots! It’s always fun to make a comparison later to see how all your careful planning transformed the space.

Tip: Let your neighbors know about your plans before you begin demolishing your kitchen; they’ll appreciate the heads up.

2. Re-evaluating your design

At your own pace

Once the kitchen is taken out, examine the space and look for any factors you may not have taken into consideration, such as construction flaws. You can work closely with your kitchen designer and contractor to see if the design for the new kitchen needs to be adjusted.

C) THE ESSENTIALS

After the old kitchen is taken out, your team will start getting the key aspects of functionality in place. This will include:

1. Plumbing and rewiring

2-5 days

The rough-in work will cover the plumbing, electrical, and framing requirements. You may need to factor in a little more time for a home inspection once this is done, to make sure everything is up to code.

2. Walls, doors, and windows

2-3 days

This stage lays the foundation for other important aspects of your kitchen. Complete the doors and windows before you move on to anything else because they will impact your cabinetry measurements.

3. Flooring

1-2 days

Some contractors prefer doing this after the cabinetry, while others strongly believe it has to be done before that. We tailor our recommendations to suit each project, ensuring that our clients always get the best, most efficient plan and kitchen remodel timeline to suit their needs.

4. Design refinements

At your own pace

Here, you have another opportunity to check for any measurements that need to be modified before you install your new kitchen.

D) THE NEW KITCHEN

Ready to see your new kitchen? This is when it’ll start to materialize!

Kitchen remodel by Bath Plus Kitchen in N. Arlington

1. Cabinetry, countertops, and fixtures

1 week

Your contractor will put in the new kitchen cabinets, countertops, and plumbing and electrical fixtures at this stage. It usually takes around a week if all the materials are supplied on time.

2. Install your new appliances

1-2 days

Finally, everything you need to get cooking is brought in, including your refrigerator, stove, and microwave. When that’s done, you’ll be very close to the finish line.

3. Add the finishing touches

2-4 days

Check your original design to see if there are any details that still need to be taken care of. Do a thorough check before you clean up the kitchen and call it a wrap.

The remodel process looks a little for everyone, but the kitchen remodel timeline estimates we’ve shared should help you decide when to start the process. Here’s a summary:

COVID19 home safety for your long-term wellbeing

COVID19 home safety for your long-term wellbeing

COVID-19 home safety has become a priority for people everywhere as they try to protect themselves and their loved ones. The coronavirus has compelled us all to change how we live and work. Because of new restrictions and safety recommendations, we’re spending more time indoors. It looks like this isn’t going to change anytime soon. Even as restrictions ease, it will be important to have a comfortable and safe space to spend a lot of time in.

It’s not just the risk of exposure outdoors that we need to worry about; preparing your home for your family’s wellbeing is an essential part of staying safe and healthy. Having designated spaces in which to work, study, or home-school children can make things easier on you and your family. Here are some things you can do for better COVID-19 home safety and your long-term wellbeing.

1. SANITIZING SURFACES

The CDC recommends cleaning and disinfecting “high-touch surfaces daily in household common areas (e.g., tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, light switches, phones, tablets, touch screens, remote controls, keyboards, handles, desks, toilets, sinks).” But how can you improve COVID-19 home safety without damaging these surfaces? The following tips will help:

Countertops

  • For tile, stainless steel, and other more resilient surfaces, use a government-approved disinfectant or a disinfecting agent such as bleach in a solution. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If your countertops are made of granite, marble or other natural stones, ensure they are sealed. Many experts recommend doing this every 3 to 6 months, and it’s especially important to stay on top of that now if you are using chemical cleaners. A good clean with soap and water works well together with an alcohol-based disinfectant.
  • Wooden or butcher block countertops require a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner, followed by a good moisturizing practice for maintenance.

Floors

  • Tile floors and bathroom walls can be cleaned with a bleach solution or most household disinfectants (check to see if they are government-approved).
  • Hardwood and laminate floors can be damaged by moisture, so choose damp mopping with a disinfectant made specifically for hardwood floors.
  • Carpets and rugs will require a carpet cleaner but look for ones with disinfecting properties.

High-touch fixtures and fittings

Door knobs, handles, switches, railings – think of how many times a day they’re touched by different members of your household. If that thought has you reaching for the bleach solution, take a minute to think about whether it would corrode the surfaces in question. Instead, you might be safer with a 70% isopropyl alcohol spray or wipes. The same goes for electronics – keys, buttons, screens. And remember to turn off switches before disinfecting them!

Furniture and soft furnishings

For your furniture and soft-furnishings, clean and disinfect with the specific material in mind. Consult the manufacturer and read product labels for more information.

In short:

  • Clean surfaces clean before disinfecting them.
  • Check instructions from the manufacturer of the surface as well as of the disinfectant before proceeding.
  • Do a spot test with your choice of disinfectant and observe, keeping an eye out for any damage.
  • Wear gloves to protect yourself from harsh chemicals while disinfecting.

2. MAXIMIZING STORAGE

Most of us are reconnecting with our kitchens during this time. You may have rediscovered a few forgotten features (and pantry items!) and thought of a few things that would make cooking at home easier. In addition to basic COVID-19 home safety, it’ll be important to make your time in the kitchen more enjoyable. We recommend starting with storage, factoring in:

  • The amount of space and how you use it.
  • How things are organized, so you know where everything is and when it expires.
  • Storage conditions, so your fresh and dry items have the environment they need.

At Bath Plus Kitchen, we ensure all our clients know the importance of cabinetry both for kitchen design and functioning. We work with top-rated cabinet manufacturers to deliver cabinetry that suits our clients’ specific requirements. Through our virtual consultation process, we take them through different options to identify what would suit them best. For example, if maximizing storage and efficiency is a priority, we direct clients to this  Dura Supreme storage brochure and similar resources. Here are some ideas you can apply to your existing kitchen or kitchen remodel:

Some more tips on maximizing storage in the kitchen:

  • Throw – do a deep clean of dedicated storage spaces such as your fridge, pantry, and other cabinets. Get rid of expired products and donate what you don’t need.
  • Plan – decide on how you will use the storage space you have, i.e., what will go where.
  • Decant – you may need to pick up some extra containers, jars, and organizers here. Try to find a container for everything to make food last longer and easier to spot, making it less likely to be forgotten and wasted.
  • Install – Try installing wall storage such as racks and shelves. You can use a pot rack in the kitchen, for example, to free up some cabinet space for more pantry essentials.
  • Make space – the last thing you need when you’re trying to cook a delicious meal is a cluttered countertop. Again, wall storage can help. Bins and baskets for other items could also serve you well.

The same applies to your storage for medicines and cleaning supplies. Toss anything expired and restock with what you need to ensure COVID-19 home safety and stay healthy. Here’s a guide on what to stock up on without emptying shop shelves.

3. IMPROVING YOUR SPACE

Home Office

Overnight, people across the globe had to switch to working from home where possible. People were compelled to get creative, with some even fashioning desks out of laundry baskets. But, of course, this won’t cut it in the long run and won’t be good for your posture and overall health. Try these tips to make your home office more comfortable so you can have a productive day:

  • Lighting – pick the right overhead and desk lighting so you’ll be comfortable working there regardless of the time of day. In addition, try to find a spot with good natural lighting for a health and mood boost.
  • Power sockets – you may need to plug in quite a few devices, so ensure there are enough sockets available. A power extender could also help.
  • Office chair and desk – check your current desk and chair to see if they’re going to be comfortable in the long run. If not, look into replacing them with more ergonomic, adjustable options
  • Ergonomic accessories – an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, second monitor, and footrest are a few things you can add to your workspace to increase comfort and protect your health.
  • Wi-Fi booster – if you’re jumping in and out of your Zoom meetings repeatedly due to network issues, consider a Wi-Fi booster or extender. You’ll have more flexibility, too, in case you need to make calls or work from a different part of your house at a moment’s notice.

Quarantine Space

If a family member has been exposed to the coronavirus, they will need a separate space, ideally their own room and bathroom to isolate in and prevent community spread. This is where COVID-19 home safety gets serious. Take a look at these WHO guidelines on preparing for this. In addition to safety precautions, there are a few ways you can make their living space more comfortable:

  • Extra blankets and pillows – this will increase comfort and make staying in bed easier.
  • Mini library – create a collection of books, magazines, and other offline entertainment that you can move to this room.
  • TV or computer – keep boredom at bay and their spirits up by making it easier for them to watch their favorite shows, for example. The right devices can make video calling easier as well, which will keep them from feeling cut off from the rest of the family. Consider a Wi-Fi booster if need be.
  • Snacks – keep a good supply of healthy snacks in the room to cheer them up. It’ll also minimize how often you need to take food to them.

Home Remodel

To help our clients improve their homes during these uncertain times, we’ve created a virtual design process with a physical component that includes samples being mailed to them. At the end of it, they will have a design that’s ready to go. After that, we’ll work out a suitable start date for the project. If you’re ready to plan a remodel and create a more comfortable living space, here are some factors to consider in light of the pandemic:

  • Easy-to-clean, resilient surfaces – with all the sanitizing and cleaning we have to do now for COVID-19 home safety, low-maintenance countertops, floors, tiles, hardware, and fittings are a good idea.
  • Touchless tech – don’t stop at smart gadgets; think touchless tech. Touchless and keyless technology for opening doors and turning on lights can make for a cleaner, safer living experience long-term.
  • Outdoor living spaces – if you have an outdoor space, consider how you would like to use it better and what you can add to encourage family members to spend more time there. Creating a relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces can improve your experience as well, and here are some tips on how to do that:

Making sure your home is sanitized and safe is an important and wonderful start. However, in the long run, you can keep yourself and your family members safe by making indoor spaces more inviting, engaging, and conducive to recreational and productive activities. We don’t know how much longer we’ll have to take these precautions for, but it’s an opportunity to reflect on our living spaces and make them a joy to spend more time in. Kitchen design trends we’re seeing in 2020

Kitchen design trends we’re seeing in 2020

As a full-service design-remodel firm, we help clients plan and create the perfect kitchen for their needs. Based on our observations from recent projects, we’ve put together a list of the biggest emerging kitchen design trends for 2020. While our clients all have their own unique preferences, there are a few choices that tend to become popular with many. We notice an instant attraction to certain features while working closely with them on both the aesthetics and functionality of their kitchens. We also see some consensus on which trends to sidestep at a given point. Subway tiles, for example, could be looking at retirement or at least a little time on the bench this year. The open-white kitchen concept may be here to stay, but we also know for a fact that many of our clients are ready for a change.

Our list of kitchen design trends highlights something the experts at Bath Plus Kitchen stand by: cabinets are at the heart of any kitchen design. When you redo your cabinetry, you have an opportunity to create a brand new aesthetic you can love for years, which is why all our cabinet lines offer lifetime warranties. Besides defining your kitchen’s look, cabinets also present a myriad of options for excellent functionality. Our clients find that our semi-custom and fully-custom cabinets give them the flexibility to plan the storage that’s best for them. With so many choices to consider, we recommend looking to leading manufacturers for inspiration.

What the kitchen cabinet experts are bringing to 2020

Delivering quality custom kitchen cabinets is a big part of what we do here at Bath Plus Kitchen. We work with the best cabinet manufacturers to give our customers a wide range of high-quality options to choose from. These top-rated kitchen cabinet brands include Bellmont, Plain & Fancy, and Dura Supreme. Let’s take a look at which products they believe will appeal to customers in 2020.

Bellmont Cabinets’ fashion update

In this video, Bellmont sums up the key kitchen cabinet design trends you’ll notice in 2020:

They also shared a fashion update, which tells us what kitchen cabinet styles customers will be looking for in 2020. We’re certain the following options will be popular with our clients:

  • Antibacterial surfaces, textured laminates and soft-touch laminates are now produced with an antibacterial treatment. The silver ions incorporated in the decorative layer attract bacteria and block their cell reproduction. Ensuring your cabinet surfaces are safe!
  • Windswept collection, described as “beautifully inconsistent” because it highlights the underlying wood grain allowing for color variances.
  • New laminates, including Roanoke (Firma) and Argento matte (Porta).
  • Fashion paint, Bellmont’s new collection.
  • Scala Shelf for a non-traditional storage option with a floating effect.

For design inspiration, browse the freshest looks from Bellmont Cabinets and keep an eye out for the slim shaker door, illusion door, and soft-touch laminates.

Plain & Fancy’s popular cabinetry options

These Plain & Fancy options were some of the top favorites in 2019 and will also trend in 2020.

  • Painted cabinetry is by far the most popular at 71% of all cabinets, as seen in the well-loved white kitchen.
  • The vogue door style, which offers a classic simplicity that can be used in traditional and modern transitional designs.
  • In an almost even split, we expect to see about 50% framed cabinets and 50% frameless cabinets. There are pros and cons to both.

Other great Plain & Fancy custom cabinet options for 2020 are white oak and their Summit collection, showcased here:

Dura Supreme’s new arrivals

  • Curated cabinet colors based on customer demand and future color forecasting, which is set to evolve every few years
  • Painted oak cabinetry
  • Shiplap panel, a striking design element for island backs, hoods, and other cabinetry accents.
  • Island end caps that are available in optional column designs and optional end treatments.

Many of these kitchen cabinet design trends will appear in homes this year. If you are planning a kitchen remodel in 2020, these ideas will help you make choices that will suit your needs while keeping you current.

The same goes for your overall kitchen design. A strong design will score high in both aesthetics and functionality, and here are a few trends that will help you achieve that.

10 fast-growing kitchen design trends you are sure to see this year

1. Two-tone cabinets

When you think of kitchen cabinetry, our guess is you’re thinking single color. Having kitchen cabinets in a uniform color and finish is certainly a popular choice. If you want to make a strong visual impact, however, two-toned cabinets are a great way to go. This is where two different finishes are used in the same kitchen. It’s something you’ll see a lot of in the latest kitchen cabinet color trends. From grey and white to multicolored cabinets, there are some very interesting and creative choices being made today.

kitchen located in Alexandria, VA that we completed last year has classic white uppers, latte base and tall cabinets, and an oak peninsula. While these different finishes create a striking contrast, they are also elegant choices that will remain in style for a long time. We chose these from our popular custom cabinet line, Dura Supreme.

Bath Plus Kitchen has designed and executed similar transformations in kitchens in Arlington, VA, Bethesda, MDCapitol Hill, in addition to this one in Alexandria, VA.

2. Standalone pantry (larder cabinets)

Highly functional, larder cabinets help you stay organized while keeping clutter to a minimum. If you’re unsure about how they would look in your kitchen, here’s some inspiration. They have specialized internal storage options that can accommodate your specific requirements. New Larder Cabinetry from Dura Supreme brings you options such as Storage Center, Beverage Center, and Baking Center with optional organizational features such as apothecary drawers and a flat Roll-Out Shelf.

3. Servo-drive push-to-open cabinets.

In addition to a contemporary look, kitchens today also benefit from features that feel state-of-the-art. A light touch is all it takes to create this stand-out, ultra-modern experience:

4. Cabinet hardware.

As a Top Knobs dealer, we see that honey bronze, ash grey, and flat black continue to be the most popular finishes for kitchen cabinet accessories. Their Ellis collection includes Amwell bars and delicately detailed knobs, pulls, and appliance pulls inspired by Southern sophistication à la Savannah, GA. Top Knobs also advocates mixing metals – such as black, bronze, chrome, and nickel – and we agree that this is an incredible way to add interest and create a unique look.

5. The Marble Look

Sophisticated and timeless, the marble look is back as a popular choice. For our customers, we recommend Silestone quartz countertops to achieve this look. Calacatta Gold is a popular colored quartz from Silestone. One that’s fast-emerging is Dekton.

6. Cladding for Kitchen appliances

Cladding turns kitchen appliances such as your fridge and range hood into part of your cabinetry. We love that seamless built-in look, and it’s fast becoming clear that we’re not the only ones. It’s why Dura Supreme recently introduced paneled hoods.

7. Floating shelves

Related to Scala shelves, floating shelves are a wonderful choice in 2020. They have a minimalistic appeal and work exceptionally well in small spaces. Hear Bellmont’s Product Director, John Brush, explain how they work:

8. Adding natural wood tones to your kitchen with an island or shelves

There is a growing affinity for natural wood tones, particularly for a kitchen island or shelves. Plain & Fancy’s white oak finishes reflect this. For many people, the white kitchen remains their first choice, but for those looking for something refreshing yet lasting, wood tones may be the answer.

9. Gray undertones for cabinets

The appeal of gray in kitchen design is easy to explain; gray will look stylish for years, and won’t make your kitchen appear outdated any time soon. That said, designers are always looking for exciting ways to reinvent gray finishes. Dura Supreme has beautiful gray paint options, from light and luxurious pearl to impactful graphite. These evolving choices are why gray in cabinetry is on our list of the latest kitchen design trends.

10. Transitional cabinetry

A transitional kitchen uses style references and inspiration from traditional kitchens to build a contemporary look that feels fresh. There is plenty of room for customization to suit your personality and requirements. The trend we are seeing is a desire for modern/contemporary/European-style cabinets. Getting the details right is integral to creating a cohesive look. Here’s how this approach worked for some of our clients in North Virginia and the DC Metro area.

There are many exciting possibilities to consider when planning your kitchen remodel, but your decisions should ultimately be based on your preferences and personal requirements. Looking at the newest kitchen trends can be an excellent starting point and can help you decide what your priorities are for your new kitchen.

What a typical kitchen remodeling process looks like

What a typical kitchen remodeling process looks like

The prospect of a new and improved kitchen is an exciting one, but taking the plunge isn’t an easy decision. That’s why we created this overview of what a typical kitchen remodeling process looks like based on our experience as a full-service design-remodel firm.

Aside from the investment and inconvenience, two of the top fears around kitchen remodels are the fear of disappointment and the fear of being misled by a contractor. We believe these concerns should not hold you back from creating the kitchen of your dreams. Instead, we recommend doing your homework and learning as much as you can about the process. When you understand the workflow, you will be in a position to collaborate successfully with your contractor and understand what’s happening at every stage of your kitchen’s transformation.

A major kitchen remodel project by Bath Plus Kitchen.

Stage 1: Set goals for your remodel

What are you hoping to achieve through this kitchen remodeling project? Here are a few goals our clients often share with us:

  • Creating a kitchen that suits their lifestyle
  • Increasing resale value
  • Incorporating smart appliances to create a more future-friendly kitchen
  • Improving functionality, so home-cooked meals become an inviting option
  • Updating the space’s look, especially for older kitchens

Defining a goal will help you share your vision more clearly with your kitchen remodeling contractor. It helps to write it out as a goal statement and share it with everyone involved. You can then revisit the document at every stage to ensure you’re on track and making choices in line with your vision. Very often, the remodel is planned with a big event on the horizon. For example, one of our clients in NW Washington, DC wanted theirs completed before their baby boy was born. We completed this project with them in 8 weeks, just a few weeks before they welcomed the newest member of their family home.

kitchen remodel

kitchen remodel process

Stage 2: Evaluate your existing kitchen
With a clear goal in mind, you can approach a designer and contractor, or a remodeling company that will do both. If you’re not sure how to evaluate them, start with these questions. Many companies have their own selection process to determine if the project is right for them. Our selection process at Bath Plus Kitchen is a curated one that’s designed to ensure each project is a good match for both the homeowner and the company. If you explain your goals clearly, it will be easier for the contractor to tell you if they will be able to execute the project to your satisfaction.

Once you have identified your kitchen remodel team, you will need to work with them to assess your current kitchen. The aesthetics are the first thing to evaluate. Ask yourself what you love about it and what you want to change. In addition, consider these factors:

  • Space – do you have enough counter, cabinet, and floor space?
  • Flow – is it easy to navigate, cook with family members, and interact with guests?
  • Appliances – should you upgrade to energy-saving, easier-to-use appliances?
  • Accessibility – can family members of various ages and use it safely, including yourself as you get older? What about people with disabilities?
  • Children and pets – do you need to make any special provisions for them?

Stage 3: Design your dream kitchen

With a clear vision of your future kitchen, you can proceed to the fun part – designing! Yes, you will need to be realistic, stick to your budget, and make adjustments for any limiting factors, but a good kitchen designer can help you find creative solutions to give you a kitchen you will fall in love with. It’s important to be flexible and open to new possibilities during the kitchen design process. However, you should also stand firm on what you really want. For example, what kind of layout works for you? If you’re not sure what your options are, explore the pros and cons of some tried-and-true kitchen design layouts.

We like to set up a meeting with prospective clients at the Bath Plus Kitchen showroom at this stage. Prior to the initial visit, we ask our clients to email us the following:

  • Photos of the current kitchen.
  • Inspirational photos and/or a summary of goals and design aesthetic.
  • Rough measurements and/or a sketch of the existing kitchen.

During this initial appointment, clients will be able to:

  • Meet and interview one of our designers to explain the project goals, learn how we work, and determine if we’re the best fit for the project.
  • Touch, feel, see our displays and samples. We’ve built out two kitchens and remodeled a bathroom to showcase our level of design and craftsmanship.
  • Settle on a rough budget for the project, depending on the size, scope, and level of materials required.

Once this is done, we go on to prepare plans for the job that include photo-realistic renderings for our clients. It’s a critical step because it will give you a clear picture of the kitchen you are planning.

Stage 4: Apply for building permits

Once those plans are drawn up, you will need to apply for building permits. We work with clients from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC, and know that requirements vary based on location. That’s why it’s always best to consult your local permitting office to ensure there are no oversights and potential code violations. Here are a few things homeowners should keep in mind regarding the legal aspects of remodeling.

Stage 5: Select your materials

Material selection is an integral part of the kitchen remodeling process. At this stage, you will need to select materials that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and that will suit your budget. Remember that this is an investment, and cutting corners here can make you unhappy with the final outcome. It’s essential to think long-term when it comes to choosing your flooring, appliances, cabinets, light fixtures, countertops, backsplash, and other kitchen elements.

That said, there are several incredible options to choose from that will suit your budget and needs. The Bath Plus Kitchen experts believe that kitchen cabinetry can make or break a kitchen design, which is why we offer fully-custom and semi-custom cabinets from top-rated cabinet manufacturers. For example, many of our clients love the versatility of the Bellmont cabinets that we help them customize.

Stage 6: Complete the demolition and re-evaluate

Here’s where the real work begins. Your team will start to remove your existing kitchen – floors, cabinets, appliances, and perhaps a few walls. A good team will minimize the mess and inconvenience, which will make a massive difference to you if you opt to live at home during this time. Once this is done, your team will inspect the kitchen to see if any adjustments need to be made due to unforeseen factors such as uneven floors and other construction flaws.

Stage 7: Start the plumbing and rewiring (rough-in work)

This covers the framing, plumbing, and electrical work. At this stage of the kitchen remodeling process, the focus is on the walls of the kitchens and what goes into them. Since adherence to codes is essential here, it’s important to let the professionals decide the best way forward. A professional inspection will happen at the end of this stage to ensure your remodel is up to code so the work can continue.

Stage 8: Finish the walls, doors, and windows

Once you pass the inspection, you can complete the walls. This will entail hanging, taping, finishing, and priming drywalls. Doing a thorough job here will make the next stages of the kitchen remodeling process smooth sailing. After this, you can move to the doors and windows; finishing these will ensure your measurements for the cabinetry are correct.

Stage 9: Complete the flooring

Contractors choose to do this at different points during the kitchen remodeling process. Some believe it works better if done after the cabinetry. We like to make a recommendation based on each project and its unique requirements. To decide on your flooring, look up a range of options for inspiration, from the classics to the trends.

Stage 10: Make design refinements

Before you proceed with the cabinetry, countertops, plumbing, and fixtures, take a step back to evaluate your plan in the context of your kitchen so far. Are there any adjustments to make or measurements to modify? Look for these and make any refinements necessary.

Stage 11: Install the cabinetry, countertops, and fixtures

This is where things start getting exciting, as you begin to see your kitchen come to life! Those materials and elements you so carefully selected will be installed. Your new kitchen cabinets, countertops, plumbing, and electrical fixtures will all fall into place, allowing you to finally see your new and improved kitchen.

Stage 12: Install your new appliances

Here’s where your new appliances will be installed. This includes items that will have a fixed place in your kitchen, such as your fridge, stove, and microwave.

Stage 13: Add the finishing touches

Once all the major tasks are completed, it’s a good idea to go back to your list and see what’s left. You can get these done and add the finishing touches. As mentioned earlier, the flooring may be put in last, so this last stage will look a little different for different projects. We recommend taking the time to check all the little details before your contractor calls it a wrap.

Stage 14: Say hello to your new kitchen

This is where you remember why you wanted a remodel in the first place! Step into your new kitchen and celebrate all the hard work and brilliant ideas that went into creating a space that you will love for many years to come.

A kitchen remodeling project is a major undertaking. However, when well-executed, it offers you and your family a beautiful setting in which to make wonderful, priceless memories. That’s something we’ve helped our clients experience through our many kitchen remodeling projects in VA, DC & MD. Remodel preparation tips for yourself and your home

Remodel preparation tips for yourself and your home

The benefits of careful remodel preparation become apparent when you’re right in the middle of a project. At that point, you can no longer see your old kitchen or bathroom, and the new one hasn’t taken shape yet. The sight can be unnerving! Now imagine your family coping with all the change and inconvenience a few weeks into the project – what does that look like? It may be scary, but that kind of thinking ahead is exactly what you need to do before you flag off a major home renovation project.

If you’re on the verge of starting a home remodel project, these 10 tips will help you get yourself, your family, and your home ready for an exciting upgrade. As a full-service design remodel firm, we’ve helped clients in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC put these tips into practice. In our experience, if everyone involved is prepared for the challenges, you’re likely to enjoy a smoother process and a better outcome. More importantly, it will encourage your family to be supportive of each other during what is almost certainly going to be a trying time.

1.  Write down why you want this remodel

This exercise will remind you why the remodel is important. The list will come in handy on days when you feel overwhelmed, which can happen during any home improvement project, even with the most thorough planning and careful execution. Visualizing your new space can calm you down and help you keep the bigger picture in focus. We suggest inviting all members of your household to participate. A fun remodel preparation activity could be creating a vision board for your remodel together. It can include home remodeling trends that inspired the new design plus little décor items you can add once it’s complete. It’ll show you what to look forward to, at a glance.

2. Compare your current space to your future space

A written description or collage will help you envision the remodeled space, but it helps to go deeper. Do a little comparing and assess how your current kitchen/bathroom serves you vs. how you want your future kitchen/bathroom to serve you better. You can detail out what drew you to specific features. For example, write down why you chose those kitchen cabinet accessories, why a certain type of kitchen cabinetry was the best fit for you, how you settled on a particular material for your countertops, or why you chose metal strips or bullnose tiles for your bathroom tile edges. This is an excellent way to keep yourself and everyone involved excited about the outcome. It’ll also remind you why you made those choices after the fact – sometimes it’s hard to remember the reason behind a decision!

3. Create a budget and shared calendar.

At this point in your home remodel preparation, you will already have a budget for the remodel in place. In addition, plan your living expenses, factoring in additional costs such as eating out. When you do this, having to spend on things like takeout and temporary accommodation won’t feel unexpected and stressful. You can also put together a shared calendar, marking important dates and events as well as different phases of the remodel. This will come in handy if you have to make special arrangements for some days. For example, if you need to find another place to stay during certain parts of your remodel.

4. Have a Q&A session with the professionals

In addition to getting their home remodeling recommendations, consult your team on the practical details that will affect your day-to-day life during this period. Sit down with them and have an honest conversation about your concerns, so they can help address them. At Bath Plus Kitchen, we set up pre-construction meetings with our clients. We make sure all the key team members – the sales designer, job supervisor, specialty tradesmen, architect and/or other designers – are involved in this step of remodel preparation. These meetings help everyone get on the same page, so we highly recommend them.

Once you have a good idea of what to expect, be sure to discuss it with your neighbors so they are prepared for any noise or inconvenience.

5. Evaluate your experience with your contractor so far

Before you commit to a potential contractor for your kitchen or bathroom remodel, ask yourself if you can trust them to get you through any delays or bumps in the road. You should feel sure that your comfort, convenience, and concerns are important to them. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  • Unusually low rates. While a low price sounds great, the reason someone charges significantly less than their competitors do isn’t often good. It could be because of poor quality work and bad reviews.
  • They’re not keen on detailed contracts. Getting all the details straight is very important and verbal agreements are risky business here. Before you dive into a big project, make sure your contractor is happy to put it all in writing.
  • They don’t have project samples or recent references. In addition to looking at their best work, it’s important to see recent work as well as ongoing projects. It’ll give you a better sense of what you can expect now, as opposed to going only by older projects.

Here are some more warning signs to look for when hiring a contractor.

6. Pack away as much as possible

Once you set a start date for the project, it’s time to get packing. This includes things from connected rooms such as artwork, shelves, and clocks, which could get damaged. It’ll protect them and make cleaning up a lot easier at the end of each day. Leave just what you need. It’s also a good time to declutter, to avoid filling your brand new kitchen cabinets with things you’ll never use. If you do find yourself in need of storage ideas, Dura Supreme has some great solutions and creative tips.

7. Prepare a temporary kitchen

For anyone living at home during a kitchen remodel, a temporary kitchen is a must. The last thing you want during a stressful time is to be stuck without your morning coffee or with a pile of dirty dishes that have nowhere to go. Try to include:

  • A table or two for counter space
  • A few spare sockets so you can plug in your coffee machine, microwave, kettle, and any other small appliances you rely on
  • Basic items such as a chopping board, knives, storage containers for leftovers, basic plateware, cutlery, and mugs/glasses
  • A temporary pantry with basic food items
  • A box to store dirty dishes in, since you may not have running water close by

At the very least, this remodel preparation step will help you minimize how often you need to order in by giving you a convenient way to prepare the essentials.

8. Set up a temporary dining area

Depending on the project, you may need to create a dining area so you have a comfortable place to eat. Just like having a temporary kitchen, this will help your family feel a little less lost in the absence of their usual spot. It will also give you somewhere to spend quality time together and communicate, which is very important when you’re dealing with the challenges of a remodel.

9. Consider the comfort of children and pets

Loud noises, new faces, and a break from the familiar can be stressful for both children and pets. As part of your remodel preparation, pay special attention to their emotional wellbeing.

For children, seeing things in their home being broken or changed can be upsetting, so take the time to explain what’s happening before and during the home remodeling process. Let them know why this is a good thing and share your excitement about the new space.

Pets will need to be prepared for this gradually. You may want them to spend more time in the backyard or in a different part of the house, away from the renovation work and workers. Start getting them used to this new schedule before the work begins. In case your pets find it too stressful, you could ask a friend or relative to look after them temporarily. Some people also choose to board their pets. Be sure to consider pet safety and take all the necessary precautions.

10. Plan trips or time outside the house during the remodel period

A remodel can put a strain, however temporary, on relationships. Ensure you schedule some time away from the remodel with your partner or family – including a break from discussing it – to make it a better experience for everyone. Budget permitting, you can use the opportunity to plan a memorable staycation and even check into a nearby hotel for a few days.

Anyone who has been through a remodel will tell you that you’re in for a challenging time. But you can make it less stressful by planning ahead, considering everyone involved, and focusing on the joy the new space will bring you. Communicate clearly about what to expect and how you will handle the unexpected. Once you do this, we believe a good contractor should be able to get you through the rest. That’s why we ensure our clients can sit back and relax as we create the bathrooms and kitchens they’ve always wanted. To learn more about our work and process, get in touch here.

How to plan the perfect kitchen remodel

How to plan the perfect kitchen remodel

The perfect kitchen remodel involves making many important decisions at the right time. It can be very overwhelming, but we believe a good kitchen planning guide can help. That’s why we put together our recommendations based on years of experience providing unparalleled bathroom and kitchen remodeling services to clients in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

Before you dive into making those design decisions, however, look for inspiration. Get a strong sense of what you want your kitchen to look and feel like. Explore your options to discover which kitchens appeal to you the most. A kitchen mood board is a creative way to organize your ideas. Try to keep an open mind, since the outcome of this exercise may surprise you. For example, perhaps you’re picturing a super sleek kitchen. However, when you start looking at different photos, you could find yourself drawn to something more rustic. That’s why we always recommend taking the time to look at several kitchen transformation images and videos before you zero in on your preferences.

Complete kitchen transformation by BPK in Vienna, VA.

For clients of Bath Plus Kitchen, this is an essential step in our consultation process. We find that our showroom meetings become more productive when clients email us these inputs in advance:

  • Photos of the existing space to be remodeled
  • Inspirational photos and/or a summary of goals and design aesthetic
  • Rough measurements and/or a sketch of the room

This enables us to plan the perfect kitchen remodel for them. With your preferences listed, you can proceed to make the following choices with ease and clarity.

1. Settle on a style

Farmhouse or Industrial? Contemporary or French Country? Modern or Mediterranean? It’s time to pick a kitchen style for your remodel! Identifying a style that suits you, your home, and your practical requirements will help your kitchen designer immensely. Keep in mind that the idea of a certain style could sound better than it will actually look to you. Consider the following aspects as you compare styles:

  • Color: Do you like soft, relaxing shades or bold colors and accents?
  • Materials: Are you drawn to earthy, natural materials or sleek, glossy finishes?
  • Furnishings: What sounds better – practical or ornamental?
  • Walls: Do you like exposed brick and unfinished concrete? Or do you prefer a paint finish?
  • Decorative elements: What style will work best for the décor items you generally prefer?

2. Decide on the elements you want in your kitchen

Picture your kitchen in use. What elements would it take to bring that vision to life? These could be:

  • Base, wall, and display kitchen units
  • Island(s) with accompanying seating
  • Sink
  • Larder units
  • Hob and oven
  • Special taps
  • Sliding doors
  • Designated spaces such as a breakfast nook

Whether you’re pulling out all the stops or choosing an affordable kitchen remodel, having a clear picture of all the elements that really matter to you will ensure you end up with a kitchen you love.

 3. Assess your space and create a floorplan

Marking everything, including doors and windows, create a floorplan to scale. Being a full-service design-remodel firm, this is something we take care of for our clients, You’ll need it while finishing the next steps.

4. Plan your kitchen work triangle – sink, hob, fridge

For a perfect kitchen remodel, you will need to think carefully about the kitchen work triangle, i.e., how your fridge, sink, and hob connect with each other. Some designers now wonder if this is an outdated way to design a kitchen. Others, however, believe this approach has stood the test of time and won’t fail you. Why? Because it takes into consideration the traffic flow within your kitchen together with the key functions – preparing ingredients (sink), cooking (hob), and storing food (fridge). We recommend going over these options with your kitchen designer.

5. Choose a look for your cabinetry

Before a kitchen renovation project, we always tell our clients to think carefully about the cabinetry they choose because we believe kitchen cabinets are the cornerstone of any kitchen design. It’s where many people go wrong by overpaying or not choosing the right dealer, for example. That’s why it’s the first item on our list of common kitchen remodel mistakes. To ensure our clients always have the best, we source our featured cabinetry lines from top-rated cabinet manufacturers such as Plain & Fancy and Dura Supreme, which we can customize to fit your budget and style.

Ensure you have the right cabinets to make yours a perfect kitchen remodel. Do this by looking at all the details – cabinet door profile, door styles, finish, function, and organization. For inspiration, check out the new cabinetry that our clients chose for their dream kitchens.

6. Pick a worktop that suits your needs

The look of a countertop is crucial when it comes to establishing your kitchen style. However, what will eventually become more important to you is maintenance. A worktop is something you need to commit to. For example, marble is timeless and elegant, but are you willing to seal it every 6 months to 2 years? Learn more about selecting the right countertops before you decide.

7. Select a backsplash

A backsplash gives you a great opportunity to get creative with your kitchen design. Textured metal, mirrors, glass, tiles, stainless steel – the options feel endless. You can choose consistency with your countertops or go for contrast. As with worktops, we recommend looking deeply at the maintenance and cleaning aspects.

8. List your appliances

The features and cost of the appliances are the key considerations here. There is, however, one major overarching design decision you’ll need to make: freestanding or built-in? This will depend on what look and feel you’re going for, e.g., retro vs. smart. Aesthetics and functionality both come into play here. As you work out your preferences, take a look at this guide to choosing the best kitchen appliances. It covers options such as:

  • Fridge/freezer – compact, drawer, American-style, chest, etc.
  • Cooker, oven, or range – single, double, multi-function, steam, etc.
  • Hob – induction, gas, ceramic, duel-fuel, etc.
  • Dishwasher – full-sized, compact, slimline, semi-integrated, etc.

There are also some incredible appliance trends for 2020 that you shouldn’t miss!

9. Plan your lighting scheme

When it’s all complete, you’ll want to present your perfect kitchen remodel in the best light! A good lighting scheme will cover:

  • Ambient – wall and ceiling lights to make basic functioning in the kitchen comfortable.
  • Task – lights such as under-unit lights to illuminate your work surfaces.
  • Accent – lights to draw attention to specific areas within your kitchen such as a dining area or breakfast nook.
  • Display – interior lights for display cabinets to showcase your favorite tableware and other such items.

Together, they will work to highlight certain features of your kitchen while, most significantly, improving functionality.

10. Decide on your kitchen window treatments

While you may want to show off your beautiful new kitchen, you’ll also want privacy. To achieve this, choose the right window treatments for your needs and budget. Shutters and blinds are popular choices. If privacy isn’t too much of a concern, you could opt for something lighter like window films.

11. Choose the right kitchen flooring

Food will spill on it. It’ll see plenty of foot traffic every day. Heavy pots and pans are likely to fall on it periodically. We’re talking about your kitchen floor and why it needs to be durable. Having second thoughts about hardwood now? Don’t rule it out just yet – modern sealers can make it long-lasting. In fact, there are many new finishes and materials that will suit your kitchen flooring requirements. For example, practical, budget-friendly vinyl had a reputation for being low-quality, but luxury vinyl is now changing that. To sum up, update your knowledge of kitchen flooring options – what’s possible could surprise you!

BPK kitchen remodel in Mt. Vernon. Floor tile installed in a herringbone pattern.

12. Pick your paint

As with the components above, your paint choices will also depend on the kitchen design style you choose. For example, if you’re dreaming of a coastal kitchen style, gentle blues and light beige would work beautifully. If your style is more eclectic, the only rule is there are no rules – make it personal and choose what you love. An industrial style kitchen will emphasize exposed brick and unfinished concrete over painted walls.

13. Find the right people for the job

To execute the perfect kitchen remodel, you need a top-notch team. The best kitchen remodeling contractors will be transparent about costs, timelines, and their own expertise. We find that this transparency encourages our clients to share more ideas and questions with us. This ultimately enables us to get all the details of their dream kitchen or bathroom space right. It’s essential to speak freely with your design team and contractor and have all your questions answered. You should also:

  • Look at a range of their projects, e.g., best, most recent, and ongoing.
  • Assess how willing they are to detail out the project in writing.
  • Follow up with their references one-on-one.

These tips will bring you closer to finding a team that cares about your comfort and vision for your kitchen.

With so many options to choose from, decision fatigue can be a problem. However, keep in mind that this is a short-term issue – one that we can help you with. It’ll all be worth it when you and your family are spending time together and exploring your culinary talents in the kitchen of your dreams!

Major kitchen remodeling

The main idea in a minor remodel is that the existing footprint of the kitchen is preserved, while more things are added to it. Also, sometimes, the appearance is modified, or the appliances are replaced with better ones.

Kitchen remodeling: A smart investment

The sale of a house is greatly dependent on its kitchen too. To speak in a literal sense, a kitchen remodel can make or break a great house sale. This factor is a major one when it comes to hiking the resale prices of any house. You remodel its kitchen, and you instantly change the entire look of the house.

Speaking from previous observations, the kitchen remodels that are smaller are a much better option to go for. This is because smaller remodels are better at solving functional problems. Thus, the styling of the kitchen is much more versatile. On the other hand, when one goes for expensive styling, it usually relates to aesthetics and personal preferences come in. There are many buyers in the market who are not really looking for a house with a full-fledged, ornamented kitchen with high costs.

When the talk is about your home, a place that you are not planning to sell off or rent in the near future, personalize it as per your style and liking. After all, you should love cooking in your space. In fact, there are many people who complain at a later point and say that they have regrets about not spending a little extra on their kitchen remodeling

What aspects of the kitchen need remodeling?

The answer to this question can vary for different individuals. However, there is a list below that will help you understand the different components that you can look into when it comes to deciding the kitchen remodeling costs in your DC home.

  • Kitchen cabinetry: When deciding on the budget for your kitchen’s renovation, keep in mind that about one-third of the kitchen remodeling costs are going to go in cabinetry. The best choice would be to go for either custom or semi-custom cabinets. The reason for this is that they fit really well into the existing design of the kitchen most of the time.
custom cabinets Washington DC
  • Appliances: This aspect completely depends on the condition of your appliances. Keep in mind an use the appliances that are in good condition. This is going to help you save better. However, in case there are certain appliances that are not energy-efficient, it would be a smarter idea to replace them while you are considering the other kitchen remodeling costs.
  • Lighting and electrical fittings: The first important thing to keep in mind here is that you should always get in touch with a professional to help you with the lighting and electrical fixtures for your kitchen. When talking about kitchen remodeling costs, if you have the budget, you can opt for under cabinet lights.
  • The kitchen sink and countertops: There are different types of countertops available. The type that you pick for your kitchen depends on the budget you have, maintenance criteria, and the styling that appeals to you. The countertops of materials like granite, stone surfaces, and quartz are highly durable. However, these are expensive choices too. On the other hand, laminates are much cheaper, but their durability is not as high as other materials. Ceramic tiles are also a great alternative, but the quality is highly dependent on the budget and the brand.
  • Wall painting: It is always a good idea to make a wall painting a part of your kitchen remodeling costs. When you apply a fresh coat of paint in the kitchen, it looks much better and can make the kitchen more vibrant. Also, a few paint cans and brushes are all you need for it! Therefore, it won’t cost you much.
  • Flooring: When deciding the kitchen remodeling costs, keep in mind that the cost of flooring is going to depend on other factors. If there are just a few cracked tiles and if you can find the same model as you have in your kitchen, replace only the broken ones. When talking about affordability, vinyl would be a smart flooring choice for the kitchen area.
  • Plumbing work: If you are opting for a remodel for the kitchen sink, appliances, and faucets, the chances are that you are going to need some plumbing work as well. Even though plumbing does not take up a significant part of the kitchen remodeling costs, one can’t neglect this cost either.
  • Complete demolition and rebuild: Complete demolition and rebuilding of the kitchen are going to cost you much higher as it involves the main structure of the kitchen. Therefore, the costs are going to go really high. However, if that is what you are opting for, pick the design and styling according to your liking.

Kitchen Love Story: A Family Redesigns their Life by Redesigning Their Kitchen

Kitchen Love Story: A Family Redesigns their Life by Redesigning Their Kitchen

Married couple, Eric and Marissa Shipe purchased their Virginia home with the initial intent to immediately remodel the kitchen. They loved the home, but there was no way they could live with the kitchen layout. It had to be the first thing to go. Marissa spends hours in the kitchen. Not only does she have a talent and a passion to cook and bake, but she also owns her own baking business, MJ Bakes. Not to mention both Eric and Marissa work as professional kitchen designers at Bath Plus Kitchen in Alexandria, VA. Kitchens are a major part of their lives! Remodeling the kitchen should be an easy job to jump into… right?

Kitchen Remodel

Well, life kind of got in the way of their initial plans. As soon as they moved in they unexpectedly had to replace their entire HVAC system and water heater putting their kitchen remodel on hold. For over 2 years Marissa suffered in the tiny closed-off kitchen with very little counterspace, hardly enough storage, and many hours of laboring alone in the closed-off space. Then along came their beautiful bundle of joy, Charlotte! With the new addition to the family, the couple realized their kitchen remodel was long overdue. It was time for a change.

“It got to the point where Marissa was ready to leave me to fend for myself until the kitchen was done…” explained Eric jokingly “Knowing that I was facing potential malnutrition and starvation in Marissa’s absence I decided to finance the project.”

kitchen remodel

Given this was their own space to design, they felt inspired to push the envelope a bit to see what was possible. They put both of their kitchen designer heads together and dreamt up several kitchen layout concepts. They finally decided on flipping the kitchen to the opposite exterior wall and to take down the interior walls to create a more expansive kitchen with an open floorplan. “Marissa truly does spend a lot of time in the kitchen. The remodel has made that time so much more enjoyable for both of us. It’s nice to actually see and talk to her more. Before the kitchen was too small for more than one person,” stated Eric.

Kitchen Cabinets

They both knew they wanted to do something different than the white cabinets, so what’s the opposite? Black! “We brought in the stained cherry cabinetry to mix it up and to try to blend the base cabinets with the floor.” Eric expressed, “We fell in love with the look of cherry inset cabinetry a bit more than expected.” Marissa came up with the idea of a contrasting hood and white appliances and the design started to all fall into place.

kitchen countertop

Eric wanted to make sure that the kitchen was as comfortable and enjoyable for his wife, who spends all day in the kitchen. So he spent much of his time on the project focused on the details of the layout and storage. Marissa frequently ran out of counter space and oven space in her old kitchen, so the large kitchen island countertop and a 36” range was a must.

kitchen Remodeling

“When we finished the kitchen we were both like, why the heck did we not do this sooner? It’s totally transformed our lives for the better,” explained Eric, “We love it! Our whole family spends so much more time together and our kitchen is now the envy of the neighborhood. I’m a lucky guy!”

Most of all, little Charlotte, an aspiring chef in her mother’s footsteps, adores spending time with her parents in their new kitchen!

If you are planning a kitchen remodel you might think it easy to choose from the types of kitchen cabinets available. However, there are many more decisions to be made when it comes to selecting your dream cabinetry.

In addition to choosing from framed cabinets or frameless cabinets, you’ll need to pick from stock, semi-custom or custom cabinet options, select finishes and inserts, and different door shapes!

Consequently, if you don’t know the particulars of all your options, it is quite overwhelming. With that in mind, we cover the difference between all the types of kitchen cabinets and options and details you can select.

Framed Cabinets vs. Frameless Cabinets

One of the tough decisions you’ll be faced with is deciding between framed cabinets and frameless cabinets. Therefore, we’ve outlined the pros and cons of both types.

Framed Cabinets

Framed cabinetry lends itself to the traditional. And, the frameless look was a popular European manufacturing style. Today, both styles are widely available here in the United States.

Flush inset cabinetry

With framed cabinets rails and stiles are used to create a face frame (think picture frame). In this style of cabinetry, the door hinges are attached directly to the frame. This helps give the cabinet strength and sturdiness.

Face frames are 1 1/2″ wide. Without a face frame (frameless cabinets) the case of the cabinet is exposed. Typically cabinet casing is 3/4″ thick. The end result is the sides of each door and drawer opening are 1 1/2″ wider. Also the same goes for the tops and bottoms of the cabinet opening, it’ is also 1 1/2″ wider.

Framed cabinets often have adjustable shelves and support many different types of doors. As a result, they provide homeowners with many design possibilities. The photo above shows framed inset cabinetry.

Frameless Cabinets

Frameless cabinets have a more contemporary look to them. Using thicker casing for construction keeps them sturdy. This cabinetry type features door hinges secured directly to the inside of the box, instead of onto a frame. After they have been installed, all you will see are the flat door and drawer fronts. This helps to provide a sleek, simple aesthetic that many homeowners love.frameless cabinets

Stock, Semi-Custom & Custom Kitchen Cabinets

The extent of customization you choose for your kitchen cabinets dictates the size and layout of your space. For smaller kitchens, going fully custom with your cabinets might prove to fit your budget nicely. While a large kitchen might require stock cabinets to be affordable. Below you’ll find the specifics of the three types.

Stock Cabinets

A great option for the budget-minded, stock cabinets are the most affordable option. With stock cabinets, you are limited in sizes, styles, and colors. If you are considering this option be prepared to make some compromises to your layout and maybe even your style. Generally, for stock cabinetry, we work with Waypoint Living Spaces.

Built in the USA, each cabinet WayPoint makes with American pride and expert craftsmanship. Their design focus is on creating kitchen and bath cabinetry with high style and optimal function. Learn more about Waypoint Living Spaces.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

Semi-Custom Cabinets come built-to-order. With these, you get a lot more of a selection to pick from than you do with stock cabinets. Consequently, available cabinet widths come in 3” increments starting at 9” wide. Semi-custom cabinets generally allow you to choose your wood species, door style, and color. If you have a specific vision in mind and your budget allows, you will have to compromise less going this route over stock cabinets. We use Dura Supreme Cabinets for our built-to-order and semi-custom cabinets.

Cost Comparison of Stock, Semi-Custom vs Custom Cabinetry

In regards to price differences between semi-custom and custom cabinetry, there are a multitude of variables. Generally, the price difference has more to do with the wood species and door style than anything else. For example, cherry wood will typically add 40% to the cost of the cabinets compared to birch wood. Other wood species include maple, oak, walnut, and alder. If you’re interested in doing framed inset cabinetry that tends to add 10 to 15% to the cost of the cabinets. In comparison, painted cabinets have a 10% upcharge to them.

Kitchen Cabinet Quality vs Cost

Stock cabinets start at $70 per ft. These cabinets are the most inexpensive of the cabinet types and can save you money on the front end. However, because of the lesser quality materials used, their aesthetic and functionality may wane over time. As well, due to their pre-production, you will be limited in style and finish much more than if you chose semi-custom or custom cabinets.

Semi-Custom Cabinets start at $150 per ft. These mid-level cabinets are semi-custom and offer the best choice for many homeowners looking for a balanced mix of quality and price. Custom options for these cabinets include size, materials, style, finish, molding and trim, and matching accessories.

Custom Cabinets start at $500 per ft. Premium top-tier generally offer the most options in terms of configuration, storage, and functionality. They are made with higher-end materials, hardware, and stylization and tend to be considered a luxury product. For that reason, fully custom cabinetry gives you the exact look and performance you desire but for a premium price.

Frequently Asked Questions About Types of Kitchen Cabinets

What makes a good quality cabinet?

With so many cabinet products to choose from, it can get a bit stressful trying to determine what is a quality cabinet vs a cheap one. Typically, well-built cabinets have a slew of features you should be on the lookout for including:

  • Solid wood drawers
  • Dovetail joinery with no staples or particleboard
  • Fully extendable drawer guides
  • The finishing process for painted or stained cabinetry
  • Quality of the wood, are you getting grade A lumber?

Why can’t I just have my cabinets refaced instead of buying new ones?

Refacing is certainly an option if you want to save money. However, we don’t recommend it as many issues arise when refacing cabinets. Hence, they cost you more money than you saved over time. When replacing door and drawer fronts the front-facing section of the cabinet frame will need to be replaced. This ensures the doors/drawers and cabinet match. As a result, shifting or peeling of the laminate refacing begins to show ugly seams over time.

Finally, refacing makes little financial sense as the majority of cabinet remodeling cost (70%) is the cabinet door. So, if you are going to replace the doors and drawer fronts, why not buy all new cabinets?

1.  Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Paying luxury prices for RTA cabinets imported from China.

Unfortunately there are many cabinet dealers selling homeowners in the Washington, D.C. area a bill of goods. And all too many homeowners who are happy to oblige. Therefore, you want to avoid getting hosed on kitchen cabinets it’s important to pay attention here.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like paying more money than I have to for something. The problem is when I pay top dollar to find out later I got ripped off.  In other words, with cabinets being the largest ticket in item in most homes you’ll want to pay attention here.

It’s important that you visit a showroom. Ours is a quick trip from the District. You can schedule your visit here.

At our showroom you’ll have the opportunity to see cabinets in person, understand how they are built, where they are built, and review brochures. You’ll also get a sense of how cabinet prices compare. A showroom with cabinets ranging from upscale to semi-custom or builder grade will have a lot to offer you.

Before making the trip visit the kitchen cabinet dealers website.  Meanwhile, see what cabinet lines they carry to get a quick sense of what’s available. If all of the lines are imports from China they shouldn’t cost more than $600 per cabinet. Run if someone is trying to sell you an RTA (Ready To Assemble) China import for more than that.

Big picture view: how cabinet companies compare

Upscale Cabinetry $

At the top are high-end luxury kitchen cabinets. Our Plain & Fancy Cabinetry line fits the bill here. Plain & Fancy Cabinets will typically price anywhere from $1,500 to $3,800 per cabinet.

  • Hand-sanding – all finishes areas are sanded by hand.  As a result, this creates a very smooth finish in preparation for paint or stain.
  • 2 coats of primer & 2 coats of paint.  The primer is in the same color as your paint.  Therefore, you’ll have a thick layer and a beautiful layer of painted cabinets that will hold up for decades.
  • Cabinets joined together to form one larger cabinet.  This eliminates seams and makes it easier to install cabinets for your Washington, DC kitchen remodel.
  • Walnut cabinet interiors & walnut species are available if you’re interested in stained cabinets over painted.
  • Lighting integrated and routed into the cabinets.
  • Lights that open when you open a door.
  • Motorized doors and drawers that open and close with a gentle touch or push of a button.
  • 1” thick cabinet doors are available.
  • Full custom down to 1/16th of an inch.

Popular Custom Cabinetry $

If you don’t quite need all of the luxuries that come with a fully-equipped high-end cabinet but still want a lot of customization then a popular custom cabinet line is for you. Durasupreme Cabinetry is our line we recommend you consider. You’ll love these cabinets and all that they have to offer.

Semi-Custom Cabinetry $

If you’re looking for a simple kitchen remodel consider a stock or semi-custom line of cabinets. Our Waypoint Cabinetry line is a semi-custom line. It offers a lot at a competitive price point. This line will compete against the big box stores.

You’ll also need to choose between framed and full-access / frameless kitchen cabinets.  Framed kitchen cabinets are the more traditional style, using frames on the fronts of cabinets to give cabinet boxes strength and for attaching door hardware. Framed cabinets use a variety of door styles and are adaptable to many designs.

Full-access / frameless kitchen cabinets, because they have no frame, are made with stronger boxes to compensate for the structural loss. Therefore, hardware mounts directly to the cabinet boxes, giving frameless cabinets a very sleek look. Frameless kitchen cabinets also offer easier access and even larger drawers, as there is no frame to account for in their design.

2.  Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Making assumptions about removing walls.

Many Washington, DC kitchen remodels include opening up space by removing walls. This can have a marvelous effect, but it may be quite costly if the walls in question are load-bearing walls. These walls often contain ducts, plumbing, and radiator piping, which can make removing them unaffordable for some. If you’re planning to remove a wall, make sure you work with a contractor who has a working relationship with an engineer – this will drastically cut down on uh-ohs.

Learn about our design and remodeling process.

3.  Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Relying on a builder to design your kitchen.

The key to your new Washington, DC kitchen remodels is working with a kitchen designer who both understands your needs and has access to cabinet lines that will meet them.  Also, you want a designer who understands moderntransitional, and traditional kitchen design.  It’s important to do your research on the cabinet lines offered by your designer. We’ve seen some kitchen designers and remodelers carry three or four stock cabinet lines imported from China and try to pass them off as ‘luxury’. Don’t find out after the fact, understand what you’re paying for in a cabinet.

Also, be sure to take a look inside your walls early in the design phase – making small holes in the wall will allow you to look inside and see what you’re dealing with. Consider doing this as soon as the decision is made to attempt to remove a wall, as you may find that moving your wall is far too expensive for your budget.

If you’re taking out walls you’ll want to work with a kitchen designer who works with an engineer. This is crucial. Many kitchen designers are all too eager to spend hours on design without knowing for sure whether or not a wall you want to remove is load-bearing.

It’s a good idea to consult kitchen designers one-on-one. This helps keep you in the know and in control of your kitchen remodel. Great kitchen designers can offer insight and ideas you won’t get anywhere else, and they often have an understanding of styles that can make your vision something tangible.

There’s nothing quite like seeing your vision take shape with the help of the right kitchen designer.

4. Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Taking too much advice from friends or relatives.

Chances are you don’t know many engineers or designers. But when it’s time for something like a kitchen remodel, suddenly your friends and family can become experts. Free advice is often bad advice, and you’re generally better off putting your trust in professionals you’re paying to give you advice.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling in Washington, DC you never want to make assumptions. Shortcuts or workarounds have a record of not working out. We do this every day and still don’t make assumptions. If we’re unsure about something we’ll seek the advice of an engineer, master plumber, or master electrician. You should do the same.

5. Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Not designing for flow and functionality.

If your design is too cramped for free movement or your layout is wrong, you’re going to end up with a kitchen that’s no fun to use. This is unacceptable in the most important room in your home. Be sure to leave sufficient space for walkways, and don’t neglect the importance of including a proper kitchen triangle in your design.

6.  Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel, forgetting about lighting.

Many homes in Washington, DC have small kitchens with little lighting. A happy kitchen has the right lighting when and where you need it. Designing for lighting is important, and you’ll want to work closely with your designer to understand how to make lighting work best for you.

This includes sufficient task lighting, general lighting, natural lighting, and accent and ambient lighting. You’ll want to look at all your available options, including under-cabinet, in-cabinet, pendant, recessed, and chandelier lighting.

At Bath Plus Kitchen we believe lighting is perhaps the most important element of a major kitchen remodel. That’s why we carry Task Lighting and Hafale Lighting, two of the leading lighting companies. By working with Bath Plus Kitchen you’ll have access to the latest in under cabinet, in-cabinet, toe-kick, and crown lighting.

If there’s an opportunity in your Washington, DC kitchen remodel to add natural lighting you should consider it. For inspiration check out kitchen remodeling project where we opened up the back of the house to add three sets of french doors with transoms.

7. Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Trying to save old kitchen cabinets with paint.

If your existing kitchen cabinets are in good shape, you might consider repainting them instead of replacing them. Our advice: don’t do it. Far too often, the result is a kitchen remodel that looks like what it is – a partial Washington, DC kitchen remodel with old cabinets. Your old cabinets will look their age next to all the new features in your kitchen, and by the time you see the full effect, it may be too late.

Another reason for not painting your Washington, DC kitchen cabinets is it’s a bad investment. Most homes have builder grade or shop-built cabinets. By paying to reface or paint you’re throwing good money after bad.

8. Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Refinishing old floors that should be replaced.

Beautiful, old, wood floors are great, but those magazine-quality refinishing stories of old floors usually leave out a couple of details. Chances are if you live in Washington DC your floors are over 80 years old. At that age they’ve exhausted their useful life. Also the floors have likely been refinished two, three, or even four times.

It’s a wise decision to invest in new floors and start fresh for your kitchen and your home. You’ll have the opportunity to update the floors to a wider plank. 5” wide and 7 ½” wide planks have been the major trend in flooring for a few years now. If you’d like to stick with the traditional 2 ¼” wide consider darker floors, which contrast nicely against white kitchen cabinets.

9. Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Not having a budget or not sharing it with your designer.

If you’re just starting out we recommend reviewing the Cost vs. Value Report for Washington, DC kitchen remodel.  The report provides you with averages for mid range and upscale kitchen remodels.  And it will give you at least a starting point for what to invest in your kitchen.  To clarify, every Washington, DC kitchen remodel is a custom project and varies greatly from one to the next.

Having a realistic budget and sticking to it will help you to get the most out of your Washington, DC kitchen remodel.  As a result, your designer will know where to go for an upgrade and where to save.

For those of you looking to do more than a pull and replace (keeping a similar kitchen layout) you should have money set aside in your budget for unplanned expenses. Especially if you live in an older home and/or are looking to take out a wall. The more involved your Washington, DC kitchen remodel is, the more likely it is that you’ll have at least one problem that creates unplanned expenses.

Bonus  Tip: Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel: Rushing the design phase.

Are you in the early stages of considering a Washington, DC kitchen remodel?  Most importantly, take action now.  Certainly if you have a larger project.  We see people think about a kitchen remodel for years.  Suddenly a life event happens and that kitchen remodel you’ve been waiting on has to get done now.  As a result, it’s never too early to get started.

To sum up, we recommend you plan for two to three weeks of kitchen design of for small to midsize pull and replace kitchen remodels. For large or luxury high-end kitchen remodels plan for 45 to 60 days for your design.

To clarify, that’s design time.  You’ll want to allow additional time for your kitchen cabinets to be built.  Most semi-custom to custom kitchen cabinet lead times range from 5 to 12 weeks.

Washington, DC Kitchen Remodel, Conclusion
